Thane Krios is a Drell Assassin, one of the best in the entire galaxy. He is skilled in many areas of combat, including hand-to-hand, sniping and using biotic prowess. Despite his sniping skill, Thane prefers to meet his targets face-to-face before killing them. Despite his profession, Thane is a man of spiritual beliefs, often praying before and after each assassination mission.
Thane was born in 2146. When he reached the age of six, he was chosen by the Hanar to be trained as an assassin. Thane's family allowed for him to be trained as part of the Compact, a debt of gratitude to the Hanar. At the age of twelve, Thane made his first kill. During one particular assassination mission, a civilian woman noticed Thane's targeting laser. The woman stepped in front of Thane's scope to prevent him from killing his target. Intrigued, Thane began to develop an interest in the woman. He found that her name was Irikah and soon became infatuated with her.
The Hanar allowed Thane to be released from the terms of the Compact in order for him to raise a family with Irikah. However, Thane had no other skills and so began hiring out his talents. In one particular mission, Thane was hired to assassinate a Batarian Mercenary leader. After the birth of their son Kolyat, Irikah was murdered in an act of retaliation by the Mercenaries. The Mercs hard hired the Shadow Broker to reveal his identity. The Mercenaries were too cowardly to face Thane themselves, and so murdered Irikah. Thane decided to hunt down each Mercenary, painfully killing them in an act of vengeance. This was the only time in which he killed on his own initiative. He usually kills his targets quickly and cleanly, but on this occasion he extended their suffering.
Shepard encounters Thane on Illium. Thane is undertaking an assassination contract to kill Nassana Dantius, a corrupt politician. Shepard fights to the top of Dantius Towers in order to recruit Thane. As Shepard begins speaking with Nassana, Thane drops down from the air vents, killing Nassana's bodyguards before killing Dantius with a point-blank Pistol round. As Shepard speaks with Thane, he reveals that he had that planned this to be his last mission, expecting to be killed by Nassana's bodyguards. He claims that he is dying from a condition known as Kepral's Syndrome, a disease that affects Drell. Thane agrees to join Shepard on the suicide mission to defeat the Collectors, in a hope to redeem himself from the evils he feels he has committed.
Thane is very spiritual, adopting the older Drell religions rather than adopting the Hanar religions. He prays regularly before and during each mission. Thane prays to three separate gods. These are Amonkira; the god of hunters, Arashu; the god of protection and Kalihira; the goddess of the afterlife.
Thane believes that his body and his soul are two separate things. He believes that his body is a tool that is used by others to kill, similar to how a gun is but a tool for killing.
Thane is forever hunted by the memories of the past murders he has committed due to the Drell ability to perfectly recall every detail of each memory. This has had a negative effect on Thane's conscience, causing him to carry around a large amount of guilt. This guilt, in combination with Thane's Kepral's Syndrome, was part of his reasoning for joining Shepard. Thane hopes that defeating the Collector's will absolve him of his actions.
After passing through the Omega 4 Relay, if Shepard did not research the Thanix Cannon upgrade from Garrus, Thane or Garrus may be impaled on debris during the fight with the Collector Cruiser. If Thane survives the suicide mission, he will comment on Shepard's decision with how to deal with the Collector base. If Shepard gave the base to Cerberus, Thane will claim that he is "disquieted" as he believes that the Illusive Man, who he believes is "driven by fear and wrath", is now in possession of the most powerful technology in the galaxy. If Shepard destroys the Collector base, Thane claims that it is the right and wisest decision.
It is possible for a Female Shepard to romance Thane after successfully completing his Loyalty mission. Thane will begin to call Shepard "siha" during conversations with him. Eventually he claims that it is the name "One of the warrior-angels of the goddess Arashu. Fierce in wrath. A tenacious protector."
Before entering the Omega 4 Relay, Thane enters Shepard's quarter's. He claims that although he is now communicating with his son, he is not at peace with his demons. Previously Thane had no fear of dying, but after meeting Shepard he now is afraid to die. Thane views this as a sign of weakness and begins to breakdown crying. Shepard begins to comfort him, with the two kissing before Shepard asks Thane to "...be alive with me tonight." The scene will then fade to black.
